Week 11

Week 11: Every girl is the end of the world for me
This week we had the chance to read multiple comics from the list and talk about them with a partner in class. I read a few but my favorite by far was the 'Every girl is the end of the world for me'. I just feel as though i really connected with the simple everyday struggles that the main character went through. The experiences were so personal, honest and simple. Even though it was from the perspective of a young man, most of us have struggles through starting a new relationship, and i could find some simple amusement by reading them through a comic. I actually continued reading the rest of what i couldn't finish during class at home. The art style was rough and stylized, but i actually really liked it. It was still easy to follow, and added to the honest raw experiences that the main character was gong through. Really enjoyed this one!

Week 10: Yaoi Cinderella Boy Chapter 1. This week i read Yaoi Cinderella Boy Chapter 1. This comic amused me. I have heard of yaoi before but never read any. I thought it was rather funny when my roommates walked by and caught me reading it, and as i tried to begin explaining that it was for class, i realized how much of a made up excuse that sounded like. The story was very far fetched on honestly really hard to follow. There was so much going on visually that i wasn't quit sure what order the panels flowed in at some points. And no matter how hard i tried to understand the main character and her secret life, i just kept being pulled out of the story because couldn't stand the art style. This is just my personal taste, but i find it really hard to enjoy mangas (and anime) as I'm not that much of a fan of the art style. I love old fashioned manga like ghost in the shell, but i honestly thought this was hideous. Still an entertaining read though!

1. What is your reaction to the text you just read? I honestly really enjoyed this comic. I haven't read many super hero comics, but i like the dark sinister approach to batman. This particular text also offered a lengthy series of flashbacks into the jokers backstory that i found really interesting. I wasn't aware of his previous life before all the crime, and couldn't help but sympathize a little for him. I also really enjoyed the art and drawing style of this comic.  2. What connections did you make with the story? Discuss the elements of the story with which you are able to connect. The first thing I attempted to connect this text to was all the previous ways have seen batman and these characters depicted. My favourite depiction of batman and his universe is definitely the darker take, as seen in the Dark Knight movie, and the Arkham City video game. Week 4: Tekkonkinreet This week I couldn't open any of the recommended resources that were provided on the course site. Therefore I decided to go to the school library and find a comic on my one. I stubbled across a comic that had been recommended to me several times; Tekkonkinreet. It is a Japanese comic, but does not fall into the regular manga stereotypes. Not being a big fan of anime and manga, I am always a little apprehensive when searching in the Japanese comic book section of the library, however, this week I decided to take a risk. I am so glad I did. I read the whole book in a day and then watched the movie adaptation twice. Its a very abstract and deep story that follows that tale of two orphan brothers who rule Treasure town and fight gangs. The art style alone is deserving enough for deep appreciation I have for this comic. It was interesting to see a lot of the techniques that the comic book from week one talked about applied to this week's comic.
